FCSO Warns Residents of Phone Scam after Victims Report Sending Thousands of Dollars to Sheriff’s Office Impersonator
On August 12, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office responded to Dupont Road in reference to a fraud. The 74-year-old victim reported that a man called her posing as “FCSO Sergeant Cooper” and told her that she had an active warrant for missing jury duty. The imposter then told the victim that if she did not pay a hefty fine she would be arrested.
Florence Fruehan, 59, a former local doctor, pleaded no-contest on Friday afternoon to Battery on a Person 65 or Older, a 3rd Degree Felony. He was sentenced to 24 months of probation and is required to have a mental health evaluation, no contact with any victims, and may never again work in any capacity in the medical field.
Effective October 1, 2019, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) employees will be covered by a new worker’s compensation carrier. Sheriff Rick Staly directed the Sheriff’s Office Risk Management Unit to explore other carriers for the state required insurance after becoming dissatisfied with the current carrier’s handling and denial of employee claims related to illnesses reported by employees. These illnesses are believed to be related to the Flagler County owned Sheriff’s Operations building at 901 East Moody Boulevard in Bunnell, which was abandoned by all personnel on June 15, 2018.
“These are serial burglars need to face the crimes they have committed and learn from their mistakes to become productive members of society,” Sheriff Staly said. “Now they are in the Green Roof Inn to answer for their crimes and then they will be extradited to Volusia to face their charges there.”
